What Is Data Matrix?

Data Matrix is a two-dimensional (2D) matrix barcode made of black and white cells arranged in a square or rectangular grid. Unlike 1D barcodes that store data in the width of bars, Data Matrix packs information in both directions — which is why it can hold up to about 2,335 alphanumeric characters in a symbol small enough to fit on a microchip.

Modern Data Matrix codes use ECC 200 error correction (based on Reed–Solomon codes), standardized under ISO/IEC 16022. In practice, that means a Data Matrix symbol remains readable even when up to roughly 30% of it is damaged, scratched, or obscured — a key reason it dominates harsh industrial environments. It also reads reliably at very small print sizes, down to a few millimeters across.

Where Is Data Matrix Used?

Electronics and tiny parts marking. Data Matrix codes are laser-etched or printed directly onto circuit boards, chips, and small components where a 1D barcode could never fit.

Pharmaceuticals and healthcare. GS1 DataMatrix is the standard for medicine packaging in many regions, encoding the GTIN, batch number, and expiry date for traceability and anti-counterfeiting.

Aerospace and automotive. Direct part marking with Data Matrix gives every component a permanent, scannable identity that survives heat, oil, and abrasion.

Logistics and asset tracking. Small-item labels, reusable containers, and document tracking use Data Matrix where label space is limited but data needs are high.

Retail and inventory overflow. When a product code plus extra data (serial, batch, URL) must fit on a small label, Data Matrix beats 1D codes. For standard shelf barcodes, see our barcode generator for retail.

How to Generate Data Matrix Codes in Bulk

Step 1 — Prepare your data. List one value per row in a spreadsheet — serial numbers, part IDs, URLs, or GS1 element strings. Data Matrix handles text, numbers, and byte data. Our Excel/CSV bulk barcode guide covers formatting.

Step 2 — Paste or import into the tool. Copy your column into the input panel above, or upload your CSV with the Import button. The counter confirms your entries — up to 500 per batch, free.

Step 3 — Select Data Matrix. In the Barcode Type dropdown, choose Data Matrix. Set the module size to suit your label — smaller modules fit tiny labels, larger ones scan from farther away.

Step 4 — Generate and download. Hit Start Generating, preview the batch, and download as PDF, SVG (perfect for laser marking layouts), or a ZIP of PNG files. No signup, no watermark, browser-local processing.

Tips for Data Matrix Codes

Mind the minimum size. Data Matrix can print tiny, but every printer and scanner has limits. Test your smallest size with the actual scanner that will read the codes in production.

Keep contrast high. Black cells on a white background scan best. Direct part marking on metal needs careful contrast management — etched marks may need specific lighting to read.

Do not crowd the quiet zone. Data Matrix needs a clear margin (one module wide) on all four sides. Cropping it is the most common cause of unreadable codes.

Test with damage in mind. ECC 200 tolerates damage, but verify with real-world handling — scratch a test label and confirm it still scans before committing to a full run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Data Matrix vs QR Code — which should I use?

Data Matrix for tiny labels, direct part marking, and industrial/pharma traceability — it is smaller and tougher. QR Code for consumer-facing uses like packaging links and marketing, where phone cameras are the scanner. Need QR codes in bulk? Try our bulk QR code generator.

How much data can a Data Matrix code hold?

Up to approximately 2,335 alphanumeric characters (ECC 200), though most applications use far less. Longer data makes a denser symbol, so keep values as short as practical.

What is GS1 DataMatrix?

A standardized application of Data Matrix used in healthcare and regulated supply chains. It encodes GS1 Application Identifiers (like GTIN, batch/lot, expiry) in a defined format. Our barcode check digit calculator can help validate the GTIN portion.

How many Data Matrix codes can I generate at once?

Up to 500 per batch, free, with no signup and no watermark. Run multiple batches for larger lists — for example, a full serial-number range for an inventory labeling project.
